In DAC61, Jim presented his view towards “HW / SW Contract” in AI chips. It is definitely worth watching his keynote in DAC61.
In the CPU world, the ISA + programming & execution model is obviously the contract between HW and SW engineers. However, unlike CPUs, the contract is not quite clearly defined in AI chips, and AI chips are so hard to program.
Jim spent quite some time discussing his observation on this universal problem: AI stack is an amazing set of layers, spanning 13+ orders of magnitude. From the highest level of abstraction, to the most fundamental level of computation power, AI computing covers a range that far exceeds the environment in which CPUs and GPUs were developed.

In addition, he discussed the future trends of AI computing in both the SW and HW world. We recommend our readers to check out his keynote speech.
